The architecture of Goa is multifarious. Constructions in Goa were a unification of styles, technology and details that arisen from the flowing together of innumerable cultures. The state that is known as Goa today changed hands more than a few times, from the Kadambas to the Islamic Deccan to the Portuguese living which continued 451 years from 1510 to 1961.The Portuguese played a significant part in influencing the architectural identity of Goa. However, the architecture of Goa is multi-layered, borrowing influences from a multitude of sources, and so the term ‘Portuguese’ is often misused while describing architecture in the state. Perhaps this is done to make it sound more exotic and alluring to the tourist, or at other times, it could simply be due to plain ignorance. The truth is these structures simply ought to be called ‘Goan’ due to their heterogeneity; they are exceptional and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
When the Portuguese arrived in Goa in 1510 and overpowered the Adil Shahi presence in the Old City, they took over a landscape dotted with temples and Mosques. Immediately, they took to their mission of ‘Christianization’ by building churches at strategic locations, sometimes by usurping other religious memorials. The designs of these early churches were mainly imported from Portugal. One of the Churches from this period still survives today. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is the oldest enduring church in Goa, and was built in 1543 in the Manueline style, that was prevalent in Portugal and named after the king Dom Manuel I. A Manueline product in this remote corner of the Indian subcontinent is rare, and Our Lady of Rosary with its tower-over-the-narthex, Manueline rope molding and Solo monic columns is perhaps the only structure that can be termed ‘Portuguese’ in Goa.
